Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Psychiatric care and mental health crises

Does Spring Emergency Center provide psychiatric services?

Yes. We provide emergency evaluation and stabilization for patients experiencing behavioral health crises, including suicidal ideation, severe anxiety, or psychosis.

Can a patient stay at the facility for long-term mental health treatment?

No. As an emergency department, our role is to provide "medical clearance" and stabilization. Once the patient is medically stable, our case managers work to coordinate a transfer to a specialized psychiatric hospital or a behavioral health facility for ongoing inpatient care.

What happens during a psychiatric evaluation?

Patients will undergo a physical exam, laboratory testing (to rule out underlying medical causes for behavior), and a safety assessment. We prioritize a secure and calm environment for the patient during this process.

If someone is having suicidal thoughts, should we come in immediately?

Yes. Psychiatric emergencies are treated as urgent situations, and the facility encourages patients to come in immediately. If there is immediate danger, call 911. You can also call/text 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

Electrical emergencies (shock, burns, downed wires)

Can you treat victims of electrical shock or lightning strikes?

Yes. Electrical injuries can be deceptive, often causing internal damage that isn't visible on the skin. We are equipped to monitor heart rhythms (EKGs), check for internal tissue damage (rhabdomyolysis), and treat entrance/exit burns 24/7.

I feel "fine" after a shock, but my heart feels like it's racing. Should I come in?

Yes. Electrical shocks can cause "delayed arrhythmia" (irregular heartbeat) or internal electrolyte imbalances that don't show symptoms immediately. We use continuous EKG monitoring to ensure your heart's electrical system hasn't been compromised.

When should I come in after an electrical shock?

You should seek emergency care immediately if you experience a loss of consciousness, heart palpitations, numbness/tingling, seizures, or visible burns after contact with an electrical source.

Visitor Policies

Are visitors allowed in the ER?

Yes. We understand that having a support system is vital for patient recovery. In most cases, patients are allowed to have visitors at their bedside 24/7.

Are there any restrictions on the number of visitors?

To ensure the safety and privacy of all patients, we generally limit bedside visitors to one or two people at a time. During certain procedures or high-volume periods, staff may ask visitors to wait in our lobby.

Do I need to wear a mask?

Our masking policies follow current CDC and local health department guidelines. Please check with the front desk upon arrival for the most current safety protocols.

Can children visit a patient in the ER?

Generally, yes, but they must be accompanied by an adult who is not the patient. For the safety of the child and the privacy of other patients, we ask that children remain in the exam room or the lobby at all times.

Are there "visiting hours"?

Unlike traditional hospitals with restricted hours, as a 24/7 emergency center, we allow visitors at any time of day or night, provided it does not interfere with patient care.
